Tucked quietly away inside the genealogies of 1 Chronicles—surrounded by dozens of verses listing generations of names—Scripture suddenly pauses to spotlight a brief, four-sentence prayer that altered the course of a man’s life forever. That man was Jabez, and his prayer remains one of the most explosive blueprints for breakthrough in the entire Bible.
1 Chronicles 4:9-10 introduces him with startling honesty: “Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez, saying, ‘I gave birth to him in pain.’ Jabez cried out to the God of Israel…” In ancient Hebrew culture, a person’s name prophesied their life identity. To be named Jabez (Yabetz / יַעְבֵּץ) literally meant “Pain-Maker” or “Child of Sorrow.” He was branded from birth with the label of grief and limitation.
Yet Jabez refused to let a human label or generational disadvantage dictate his destiny. He dared to cry out to the Living God with four specific requests—and verse 10 records the breathtaking outcome: “And God granted him what he requested.”
1. The 4 Transformational Petitions of Jabez
The Prayer of Jabez is not an ungodly prosperity formula; it is a posture of bold, covenantal dependence upon the God who delights in expanding His kingdom through humble vessels:
Petition 1: “Oh, that You would bless me indeed!”
In Hebrew, the phrase “bless me indeed” uses the grammatical device of duplication (Barak Barakh)—meaning to bless abundantly, supernaturally, and unconditionally. Jabez was not asking for empty worldly riches; he was asking for God’s divine favor that makes rich and adds no sorrow with it (Proverbs 10:22).
Petition 2: “And enlarge my territory!”
Territory in biblical times represented agricultural land, city gates, and sphere of kingdom influence. Jabez was saying: “Lord, do not let me live within the cramped boundaries of my upbringing! Expand my capacity, my reach, and my spiritual borders to touch more lives for Your glory.” If you are setting vision for your future, review our guide on setting god-sized goals aligned with scripture.

Petition 3: “That Your hand would be with me!”
Jabez possessed the spiritual maturity to know that expanded territory without God’s guiding hand is a recipe for disaster. The “hand of the Lord” in Scripture represents divine power, supernatural guidance, and angelic backing. In Acts 11:21, Luke records that “the Lord’s hand was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord.”
Petition 4: “And that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!”
In this final request, Jabez addresses his own name directly: “Keep me from the evil one so that I will not live up to my name of pain!” This anticipates Jesus’ instruction in the Lord’s Prayer: “And deliver us from the evil one” (Matthew 6:13). Jabez understood that increased favor attracts increased spiritual warfare, requiring continuous divine shielding.
2. How to Pray the Jabez Declarations Daily
Speak this modern scriptural declaration over your life each morning, standing upon the finished work of Jesus Christ:
“Heavenly Father, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, I come before You today clothed in the righteousness of Christ. Like Jabez, I refuse to be defined by past sorrow, generational limitations, or human labels. I declare that Christ has redeemed me from every curse!
Oh Lord, that You would bless me indeed! Release the fullness of Your spiritual blessings upon my life. Enlarge my territory—expand my borders of ministry, career, wisdom, and kingdom influence. Let Your mighty hand rest upon me, ordering my steps and granting me divine favor in every room I enter.
Father, keep me under the shelter of the Most High. Preserve me from the traps of the enemy, from spiritual pride, and from causing pain to others. Encamp Your warring angels around my household, and grant what I request according to Your glorious will. In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen!”
